Karate

Karate as we know it today follows that art of unarmed combat that was developed on the island of Okinawa. The meaning of Karate is "Empty hand", signifying the ability to defend oneself without the use of weapons. This has always been the objective of this martial art. In historical terms karate was most influenced by the Chinese fist arts. Karate is basically broken into different disciplines such as Kata. Kata is a series of preset blocks, punches and kicks against one or more imaginary attackers. From the practice of kata a person can come to see how karate evolved into an art of self-defense. Kata embodies all the principles and ideals of traditional karate. The practice of Kumite (free style fighting) helps to balance one's physical and mental development. Controlled sparring leads a student towards better hand/eye co-ordination, timing and technique. Progression is also achieved in one's self-confidence.
